OBITUARY published August 11, 1895 in The Darlington Democrat: BY LIGHTNING BOLT - Michael Cassidy, a Prominent Citizen of Calamine, Instantly Killed. Michael Cassidy, one of the best citizens of Lafayette County, and a resident of Calamine, met instant death about 9 o'clock Sunday morning. While he and his family were on the way to church at Kendall they were overtaken by a storm when near the residence of Henry McGuire. Mr. Cassidy unhitched the horse and was going toward the house when the flash occur ed and he fell lifeless to the ground. A son of Henry McGuire who stood near him was severely shocked, but recovered. Mr. Cassidy was a man of about 40 years of age and universally loved and respected. He had but recently recovered from a dangerous and protracted spell of sickness and his death is a sad blow to his relatives and friends, to whom he was more than ordinarily attached. The funeral was held on Friday and was attended by an immense number of friends. High mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Hannon and the remains were interred in Catholic cemetery north of this city.
