Article about the death of Michael Grew, published in the Dubuque Daily Herald on 4/27/1900: MICHAEL GREW IS KILLED - BRAKEMAN ON THE ILLINOIS CENTRAL STRUCK A BRIDGE AT SCALES MOUND - THE REMAINS WERE BROUGHT HERE - ACCIDENT OCCURRED LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT - THE DECEASED WAS MARRIED ONLY A YEAR AGO: Michael Grew, a brakeman on the Illinois Central, was killed at Scales Mound at a late hour Wednesday night. The train was west bound. The bridge is a wagon bridge across the track about a mile west of Scales Mound. In the darkness it is presumed that Grew did not see the bridge, or it may be he did not realize the car he was on was higher than the ordinary car. His head struck the bridge and he fell to the ground. The conductor saw his lantern fall and signaled the train to stop. The body was found alongside the track. The skull was badly crushed and death was instantaneous. The remains were taken to Galena, where the inquest was held. Coroner Bennett went after the remains and arrived with them at 4:45 Thursday afternoon. The deceased was about 30 years of age and a native of Dubuque. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Grew and the brother of Edward and William Grew. He was married just a year ago to Miss Mary Grimes, a most estimable young woman. He resided at 21 South Bluff street and had a happy home there. He was a very popular young man and was a steady, faithful employee and an industrious, ambitious young man. He had been with the Central about a year.
