Obituary published in the Eau Claire Leader Telegram, 4 March 2006: John J. Bruer Jr., 88, of Eau Claire, died Thursday, March 2, 2006 at Sacred Heart Hospital. He was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on January 22, 1918, the son of John and Alvina (Berg) Bruer. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he witnessed the onset of the conflict at Pearl Harbor, aided in the defense of the Philippines, and was liberated from a P.O.W. camp near Nagasaki in August 1945. John married Eileen T. McInnnis at St. Patrick's Catholic church in Eau Claire on Nov. 28, 1946. He worked 37 years in Eau Claire for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring as a window clerk in 1983. Throughout his life he greatly enjoyed music and performed on the saxophone in many area bands. John was a member of St. James the Greater Catholic Church. John is survived by his wife of 60 years, Eileen; two sons, John (Lili) of St. Louis, and Patrick (Jane) of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two grandsons, John Jacob Bruer of New York, and Matthew Christopher Bruer of St. Louis; and his sister, Mary Bresna of Eau Claire. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, March 6, 2006, at St. James the Greater Catholic Church, with Father John A. Schultz and Father Thomas A. McInnis concelebrating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery where military rites will be conducted.
