In the 1920 census, Helen Bruner and her son, Frank were recorded living in School District 22, Ridge, Powder River County, Montana, on February 23, 1920. They were also recorded living with the rest of their family in Rapid City, Pennington County, South Dakota, on January 17, 1920. In the Montana census, the occupation for both Helen and Frank was listed as "Farmer - Homestead farm." Helen was granted a homestead on a 320 acre parcel in Powder River County, Montana, on 3/3/1922. Her son, Frank, obtained two adjacent parcels by homestead in 1926 and 1936. Her son, Felix, had already obtained an adjacent parcel by homestead in 1918, and her daughter-in-law, Daisy Drane Bruner, wife of Frank, obtained another adjacent parcel by homestead in 1929. OBITUARY published in Gate City Guide, Rapid City, SD, December 14, 1928: "Mrs. Thomas Bruner Succumbs to Heart Trouble" Mrs. Thomas Bruner, who passed away at her home in this city Tuesday of this week [Dec11, 1928], was laid to rest Thursday afternoon. Funeral services were held from the Behrens mortuary and were attended by many friends of the deceased and her family. Mrs. Bruner's death was caused by heart trouble. The Bruners have lived in Rapid City for over forty years and have a wide circle of friends. Helen Wheeler was born April 3, 1853, near Waterloo, Iowa, where she spent her childhood. The family later moved to Michigan, where she received her education and later taught school. She was married to Thomas Bruner at Independence, Ia., in May, 1885, and they moved to the Black Hills the following year, locating in Rapid City, which has been their home to this date. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Bruner, four of whom are living. They are Mrs. L.J. Reilly of Laramie, Wyo; Frank Bruner of Denver, Colo.; F.D. Bruner of Ridge, Mont.; and Mrs. A.W. Hamlin of Souix City, Ia. Deceased also leaves four grandchildren and two brothers. Mrs. Bruner was a home-loving woman and in her quiet manner she went her own way, making many friends by little deeds of thoughtfulness which will be long remembered. |
