The 1874 plat map for Concord Township, Dubuque County, Iowa, shows that H. Slowey owned the west 1/2 of the southeast 1/4 of Section 17; he owned the northwest 1/4 of the northeast 1/4 of Section 16; and he owned the west 1/2 of the southeast 1/4 of the northwest 1/4 of section 16 - a total of 140 acres. P. Slowey owned adjacent parcels totaling 140 acres; the relationship between H. Slowey and P. Slowey is not known. The 1885 Iowa census shows P. Slowey living next to Catherine Slowey's family - his age is unknown, and he was born in Ireland. A plat map of the same area, dated 1892, shows that the land that was previously owned by H. Slowey was then owned by the H. Slowey Estate. Most of the land that had been owned by P. Slowey in 1874 was owned by Thomas Slowey (presumed to be the son of H. Slowey) in 1892; only two small parcels totaling about 28 acres, located in the southeast 1/4 of the northeast 1/4 of Section 16, were still owned by P. Slowey. |
